Remember me???

Hey there f-list! I haven't posted in forever - or at least that's what it feels like. Work has been very busy, but I have been reading most of what's going on in your lives and keeping up with news, but not much commenting or fic reading, sad to say.
I have finished my
sga_art_santa piece *is nervous* I am pleased with it but am the first to admit I suck at the conceptual side of art work.
I put up my Christmas tree last night. I went with the red apples, red and gold balls and colourful tropical fish this year! The blinking fairy lights look so pretty! Unfortunately, my camera is on the blink, so no pic! I sent off my present to Mum - she wanted colourful plastic paper clips from Japan and I sent some retro machine magnets and other sundry stationery things, which she might like (I hope!).
I went to see the American comedy play "The Boys Next Door" on Sunday, which was quite good, although I felt like I couldn't laugh at their antics in the first act - a bit un-pc, but in the second half I felt like I "knew" them better and so could chuckle more honestly - in a kind of affectionate way. I think a lot of people felt the same. Other plays I have seen recently are The Vagina Monologues (wonderful! - a friend of mine from work played in it) and Romeo and Juliet. The latter was half in English (Romeo's side) and half in Japanese (Juliet's) set in the Meiji era, but I just didn't enjoy it all that much. Romeo was an unlikeable dork, whose diction was at times inarticulate and Juliet's head kept bobbing like one of those bobble dolls, which really distracted me. I liked seeing it In-the-Round though.
In TV I have watched all of Merlin, The Mentalist and Little Dorrit, so I am up to date.
I enjoyed the first few Merlin eps, then I felt it slumped somewhat but now it has picked up again and I have really enjoyed the last 4 eps. It is SO SLASHY!!!! I kind of like the bedroom scenes! *g* I do wish that it was a bit darker ... yes, I know, it's intended for a family audience (can't help wishing, though). I like the modernist interpretation, although I sometimes wish they were a bit more classic or slightly more formal in their language/script. Don't get me wrong - I think the modern vernacular is an important source of a lot of the humour and the reinterpretation, but there are just times where I go "Urgh!" That just doesn't work!
Love Simon Baker in The Mentalist, but Robin Tunney (no blame to her) ... I feel like she's been told to play it so darkly, so hard-bitten, as a foil to the golden lightness of being that is SB, that she comes off as a bit one dimensional (or black-holish?)- she's absolutely humourless and feels so depressing. I hope she gets some moments of humour or emotion or something, to give her some contrast/range.
I'm also really enjoying Little Dorrit too!
I need to buy a heater! I tossed out my old ones when I moved cus I knew they would be too smoky for the new place. It's actually still bearable though, because the new place is so well sealed. In the old place I would have had the heater going at least in late November, if not earlier. The new place is a mucher cooler apartment in Summer and warmer in Winter.

Date: 2008-12-10 11:17 am (UTC)Well done for finishing your SGA Art Santa piece. I can't wait to see it.
Mine is totally kicking my arse, I'm afraid. :-(
*sigh*
My prompt really isn't very 'me' & I've started & discarded three pieces & am now finally getting the 4th to work (I hope anyway!) I'm afraid I've just had to go with what I can do & hope the recipient isn't too disappointed. (The request also included a song vid or a layout - neither of which I can do!)

Date: 2008-12-10 11:49 am (UTC)Thank you! I AM nervous though - to the point where I've almost sent off to you just to ask for your opinion on it and if it really sucks, mainly because, although the prompt was right up my alley, my recipient is really good at what she does.
Interested? No pressure though and I don't want to spoil it for you, if you want to wait. (Of course, you aren't my recipient *g*) I started twice and abandoned the first idea cus I had no idea where I was going with it concept-wise, ... so discarding 3 times - I feel your distress!
You know, you are so right - you can only go with what you know or what's within your ambition at the time and I so hope that people remember that - it's the thought that counts, even though I can't imagine anyone, EVAH being disappointed with your work.

You're really kind - thank you! My problem is that the prompt is incredibly specific & I just couldn't make it work. In the end I've just had to go with the fact that she did specifiy McShep & do that.

*scurries off to send to you*
P.S I just thought about our first two icons above as a conversation and realised Rodney is sulking because John is showing off his manly chest to all and sundry ... and ... and ... well, that's Rodney's!! *ggg* and I adore that orange fleece icon of yours *sighs happily*

:-)
Aw, poor Rodney. He just had to remember that he's the only one who gets to touch John's manly chest. ;-)

Date: 2008-12-10 12:45 pm (UTC)I had a minor heart attack when I had started on my second attempt - I was a fair way into it when I suddenly got the idea in my head that maybe her first choice was only Sheppard, so I went and rechecked it and thankfully the first listed preference was John/Rodney. Phew!
He just had to remember that he's the only one who gets to touch John's manly chest. ;-)
For a genius, Rodney can be pretty dense sometimes *g* but that's all part of his allure for John!
I sent the art.
