liresius: (Christmas ~ Partridge Pear Tree)

Argh! I've done my head in listening to so many webcasts and reading documents on the UN Climate Change Conference in Bali this weekend. I'm now the full bottle on COP/MOP (I just love saying that!) and all those other acronyms though. *g*

The last day was rather tense - a real humdinger and it went right down to the wire. I felt I was watching history in the making. We live in an era at the pinnacle of human civilization in many ways and it could go either way from this point, depending on how well we deal with this. We live in interesting times!

China threw a hissy fit (very rudely!) over a Point of Order. Yvo de Boer, after two sleepless nights had a minor emotional breakdown at that, and had to leave the meeting for a bit. South Africa sent a volley over towards the U.S, to great applause and I think that might have been the straw that broke the camel's back. The U.S conceded at the last minute on the India and Pakistan G77 proposal. Phew! For the U.S. to have to "give in" doesn't place them well to be leaders in that inspirational capacity leaders should have though. Mr Connaughton claimed they would be, but that earlier gaffe of his really annoyed me - especially the "everyone falling in behind the U.S." part. Grrr! If we fall in behind this Republican Government we'll all be drowning or dying of thirst in 50 years. I'm relieved there's an election coming in a year. Hopefully, that will greatly change the ballgame and save our collective bacon, because the U.S. is crucial to the whole deal.

Al Gore's speech was interesting and well delivered to a packed room. He managed to quote Charles Dickens, Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill (I liked the last quote the best - Churchill was such an inspired public speaker) as well as many others. I agree with the U.S that China should also set some emission targets along with the Annex 1 countries. I have nothing but praise for the the EU! They were just great - very dignified and prepared to make concessions. And I'm glad we (Aus) weren't the baddies this time - We're just "Waiting for Garnaut" Heheh! Yay for Kevin Rudd and Labour finally bringing Australia into the Kyoto Protocol! w00t! It's a complex problem, but I can't help feeling the failure to establish reduction targets is weak and may be fatal to us all. :-(
