A few thoughts on the season opener!

Maybe my expectations are lower now, so I'm not easily disappointed.
Enjoyed the cutting between parallel story lines, trying to save Elizabeth and the City at the beginning. Didn't mind Keller. My internal jury is still out on Samantha Carter. I think I'll give her a chance and a few more eps yet, to be fair. Cute that John had to have a word with Rodney about being in command, being kept in the loop.
The fight was great! I really thought it was the most powerful acting scene in the whole ep, and there are some really strange and funny faces in the caps I took. John was REALLY strong, very intimidating and Rodney ... I loved watching him go from nervous avoidance through argumentative and then digging in his heels quietly, drawing himself up to his full height becoming very mulish! *hearts* his very deep compassion! Hee! Poor Keller - stuck between an irresistible force and an immovable object!
The apology scene was good too, although I don't know that Rodney should have apologised. I think he did it because he has such a big heart and he can't bear to be at odds with his boyfriend *g*. They need each other, but also the expedition needs them both and I think Rodney was very aware of that. It takes a big heart to say sorry, especially for a person who is really arrogant yet he does it pretty readily. John was sore at losing that one, but he looked a bit heartbroken by it all too. Woobie! but his acting was really good in this one.
Overall, not a bad episode.

Date: 2007-09-29 05:48 pm (UTC)Although since it's the middle part of a 3-episode arc, I'll have to wait until next week to give final judgment on it.
I loved all the great moments between the boys too. I could see how difficult it was for them both to deal with the fact that the Elizabeth they knew was gone. *sniff* Poor Shep. I could see how broken up he was about losing her, but he still had to be the leader and do what was best for the city.
I was glad to see also that McKay's experiences last season -- Tao of Rodney and McKay & Mrs. Miller -- have left their mark on him. I knew he was going to call him 'John' in this epi, but it was still surprising to hear it. As was his apology. But McKay is still McKay, and I loved his scenes with Zelenka, finishing each other's sentences. *giggle*
I love Jewel Staite from 'Firefly', but boy, do I miss Carson. It would have made those scenes about Weir's prognosis even more powerful. I wonder, though, if Carson would have even approached McKay about using the nano-bots.
I'm reserving judgment on Carter too, but I have to admit her scenes dragged down the pace of the epi. I know they're trying to introduce her, but it just felt forced.

Yeah, that's true - I agree the scenes did drag down the pace, although I think it's kind of cool that they are edging her in gradually - trying to get her closer to hooking up with them. A more gentle approach than having her thrust upon them as leader.
