Hmmm ...
Well, it was bit ... er ... unexciting I thought. I liked Martha's plot line, but thought they could have made much more of it. I would have liked her adventures throughout the 365 days to be a bit more visual.
To be honest there was so much to process, I found it all a bit confusing and have absolutely no idea how the human race telepathic link with the Archangel Network worked on the Doctor to regrow him (and the floating above the ground shots were silly) or how the Captain Jack/Face of Bo thing works re the time line. Will he become, or was he the Face of Bo? It's intriguing, so I hope they aren't playing fast and loose with us and that RTD2 has planned it out. Also I don't quite know what reverting the Doctor to his original alien form was meant to achieve. The transformation came before the Master had any idea of Martha and the Doctor's strategy re the matrix, so what was the point of it all? That seemed a bit gratuitous, even though it was of course interesting to see the original Time Lord species form.
GOOD: The "You're going to keep me?" ... "Yes." *be still my slashy little heart!* and the Master's death and funereal pyre scenes, brief though they were. Just fabulous for the tender, caring Doctor/Master fic that I know must be coming out of that moment. Imagine the h/c and seduction possibilities. My mind can't help but go to benign and healing sex slavery places *g* with all that. It was very wrenching to see the Doctor's outpouring of grief at the loss of the next to last of his species. Beautiful scripting, with the "keep me" lines and great acting on DT's part as he is holding and rocking the dead Master. Still, the death angst was rather diluted later, with the picking up of the Master's ring from the pyre. I was glad to glean though, that JS will be back *g*
BAD: JB looked very grungy in a not very attractive way and wasn't utilized the way I would have liked to see. I thought the vanity stuff contrasting after, was plain silly, especially considering the Doctor's recent immense loss. The Doctor said, "Come with me!" and was clearly feeling the loss, the aloneness and Jack should have been springing to that rather than doing the earth-protection gig and obsessing about his looks. Gah! I did like the masterful moment the Doctor displayed in neutralizing that wrist time-travelling teleport.
The quarry scenes were a gift to icon maker's though! All that neutral background with the Doctor and Master in virtual silhouettes are fertile fields to plough!
ETA: Ah forgot to mention ... I note they left the U.S President dead. One wonders what the TPTB are saying here.

Date: 2007-07-03 03:11 pm (UTC)I loved the "pop video" scene - that song was perfect and JS was brilliant.
I'm confused re the Master's ending - is JS really coming back in the role? Isn't the Master dead? Or did he just download himself into the ring - but if he did, how can he get the same body back?
I noticed that about the US president! LOL! I think there was definitely a message there!
And yes, frankly, the ep was a slasher's dream. I think the Master is a naughty sub - everything he does is designed to make the Dr get tough with him. The Dr is a reluctant top who doesn't want to be in a D/s relationship though - he's too much a free spirit to want to take care of anyone. That's why he decided at the end that he'd have to change. I think even the Master's choice of name is telling - he's defines everything by power relationships and much as he seems to want mastery over the Doctor, it's the doctor he turns to over and over again, especially when he's scared about the drumming in his head. I think it would have done the Master good to have the Dr "take care" of him. I'm with you on the healing sexual slavery and I expect there will be lots of fics along those lines. I'm less interested in the idea of the Master being the top - he seems like a much more natural bottom despite all the power plays. And I found the notion of him keeping the Dr as a pet (the dog bowl) rather disturbing!
I did think everything was reset far too conveniently at the end. And much as the Face of Bo moment was fun, it was rather shoehorned in, without organically arising in the ep. And yes, Jack would have gone with the Dr, and not gone back to his lame team at Torchwood! AGH! It's a case of having your characters act out of character on purpose to fit with other considerations.
Too much plot - the Toclafane thing wasn't even interesting although it was presented as a "shivers down your spine" moment. And the line "They cannibalised themselves, became like children" makes no actual sense if you analyse it. Why on earth would the former lead to the latter?! Those people we saw didn't seem to be headed that way, no matter how dire their circumstances!
Phew - I think I've said enough!

Date: 2007-07-04 01:23 am (UTC)Hmm, you could be right about JS not returning. I didn't think of the body issue.
And you're right re the Doctor and Master. Neither of them quite fit a trad. D/s role but I agree the Master is more a naughty Sub. Despite the Doctor's free spiritedness, those grim sentences he handed out to the Family make me think he could inhabit a stern and responsible Top role when it comes down to it.

Yes, exactly. The first thing I thought with that was TPTB simply couldn't get JB schedule-wise. It was annoyingly transparent.
And yes to the Toclafane! LOL! That was idiotic! I'd forgotten that part too. 8shakes head*
