Ramona Koval (ABC Radio ~ The Book Show) discussing a book by Indian, Pankaj Mishra in which he discusses his meeting with the Tibetan poet and essayist Wosa (dissenter against Chinese occupation of Tibet) to Robert Silvers (NY Review of Books).

"In August this year [2007] the officially atheist Chinese regime passed legislation effectively banning Buddhist monks in Tibet from reincarnating without government permission."

*cracks up*

Is there anyone else around that thinks this is completely, hilariously absurd (that is if it wasn't about cultural oppression)?

Movie rec: I'm not big on westerns (except for the odd one like Who Shot Liberty Valance?), but 3:10 to Yuma is very much worth watching. I started watching it two days ago and finally finished it up tonight. I loved the themes. The little guy struggling against the big corporation (railroads) and how it can so easily go one way or the other in life. I loved how both heroes were cowards in their own way, but sought for some kind of redemption they could live with. Also, the moral ambiguities and how easy it is to misjudge a man, while there is so much more in the history of a person. Russell Crowe was great and the sound track was good too. It had musical themes from westerns of ages past that really resonated and I liked the recognition of the Chinese coolies who slaved away to lay down the tracks. Great film!
